To catch a bike thief – use GPS and Google Maps

This sounds like a fantastic idea, particularly for people living in towns and cities where I presume bike theft is at its most prevalent. Apart from the issues the author raised, there is another one… bike thieves seldom seem to get more than a rap on the knuckles when caught….naughty boy, don’t do it again. If the police clamped down hard, and the courts handed out proper, serious sentences to bike thieves, this sort of crime might be reduced. The trouble is, police cutbacks, reduction of prison spaces and mickey mouse sentences – even for persistent recidivists, means that the problem is never going to go away. Take bike theft seriously please.

I would’ve though just the police doing sting operations using the device would go a long way to reducing the crime, it would be easy to set up in city centres or places like Centre Parcs andd High Lodge. Officers could set it up, get on with their normal policing and if the bike gets nicked have fun seeing the scrotes face when they find it! If they did it enough the risk would outweigh and gain and problem solved!

That’s fine but when the local bobbies were unable to stop all their own bikes being pinched from the station……

forgot about that! …….. if they’d had them fitted, would’ve been job done. (they did recover a couple even then though).
