Thursday Night Ride

Posted: April 1, 2011 in 2011, Rides

Mike, Rich and I braved the wind for this ride on the pretext that there would be a good ‘training benefit’ from riding into the stiff wind. To start with then, I had a couple of miles gentle downhill where I hardly pedalled at all, simply being blown along to our agreed meeting point.

Once again, the tale of this ride was one where we all professed tired legs and claimed we were not going to try hard. Mike had a dodgy knee (yeah right!), I was tired and Rich was just quiet. Route agreed, we set off downwind, straight back to Rich’s house as the bushings on my swing arm had worked loose. A quick tweak and we were off on what proved to be another tough ride around the back lanes and the odd cheeky trail.

The main feature of the ride was not wind, though that played a big part, but climbing. Long climbs, short climbs, steep climbs, all were united by one factor – speed. Mike was doing his utmost to prove his superiority by pushing off the front every time the road tipped up but only once did he get more than a couple of bike lengths away. Apart from Rich guiding us down the cheekiest of cheeky trails the ride passed without incident.

Distance:  25.97 miles

Time: 1 hr 45 minutes

Average speed: 14.8 mph

Average HR: 132

Max HR 167

Tune of the ride: well there were two. I started off with this:

and it ended up with

I can’t quite work out how or when the transformation happened, but Eric and Ernie accompanied me for the last few miles!
